The salt-fog problem
Ramsgate sits in the marine atmospheric corrosion zone defined by BS EN ISO 9223. The whole town - harbour, West Cliff, East Cliff, Pegwell - gets salt-laden onshore fog and driven Channel spray in every storm. The corrosion class is C4 (High) inside 500m of the harbour and C3 (Medium) across the rest of the residential area, both of which are significantly more aggressive than inland Kent (C2, Low).
Standard IP44 exterior electrical accessories - the ones on sale for £15 in the sheds - are designed for C2. Their zinc-plated steel fixings corrode in a Ramsgate winter; their nitrile gaskets embrittle; their painted-mild-steel enclosures pit through in 12-18 months. We inspect Ramsgate exteriors weekly where an owner has fitted 'the cheap one' three years earlier and can no longer close the switch cover.
What we actually specify
Enclosure: IP65 minimum, IP66 for direct-driven-rain positions (harbour front, cliff edge, exposed balcony). Marine-grade polycarbonate or 316-stainless enclosure. No painted mild steel and no zinc-plated aluminium externally.
Fixings: A4 316 stainless steel throughout, not A2 304 (304 pits in salt fog inside 3-5 years). Nylon or brass glands, not plated steel.
Gasketing: EPDM or silicone, not nitrile.
Cabling: SWA (steel wire armoured) for external runs, with LSF (low smoke and fume) sheath. Gel-filled Wagos or gel-filled junction boxes for any joint that could face weather. Never a taped joint outside.
Sockets: IP66 with weatherproof hinged cover and drainage. Metal-backed only if 316-stainless-cased; otherwise polycarbonate.
The chalk-cliff earth question
Ramsgate's cliff-top has thin soil over chalk. Earth resistance to a driven earth rod on the West or East Cliff is usually poor (200 ohms and up rather than the 100 ohms and down of inland Kent clay). That drives supplementary bonding decisions on TT installations and any outbuilding earthing. In most Ramsgate cliff-top properties the incoming DNO earth is on TN-S or TN-C-S, which sidesteps the problem, but the moment we go to a detached outbuilding beyond the main earthing point we're back on TT and the chalk resistance matters. We test earth resistance at every relevant boundary and design accordingly.
What we retrofit most
External sockets: existing IP44 corroded, replaced with IP66 316-stainless-cased. External wall lights: existing IP44 unusable, replaced with marine-grade IP65. Junction boxes: existing wrapped in tape and failing, replaced with gel-filled IP68. It's not a glamorous job and it's not expensive per position (£80-160 per position typically), but it's the difference between a house that works in November and a house that trips whenever the wind changes.
