Why Pegwell reads differently
Pegwell sits at the southern edge of Ramsgate proper, backing onto the Pegwell Bay Country Park and Nature Reserve and looking across to Sandwich Bay. The housing stock is largely post-war detached and semi, with a swathe of 1980s and 1990s estate development that pushed the built edge to its current boundary. Plots are larger than the cliff-top Ramsgate average. Household incomes have shifted upward since HS1 opened Ramsgate to a 76-minute St Pancras commute. That combination - larger roofs, higher discretionary spend, more likely to be at home during weekdays - makes Pegwell one of our strongest solar-plus-battery markets.
What we do most here
Solar plus battery. Typical Pegwell job is a 4-6kW south-facing array with a 5.2-10kWh battery, MCS-certified, G99 to UK Power Networks Southern. Rear pitches almost always work; front pitches often work too (no Article 4 direction here). We size the system to household consumption, not to roof capacity - oversized solar with undersized battery is money badly spent.
EV chargers as an all-in-one with the solar, using Zappi diversion to charge the car from PV surplus rather than exporting at 5.5p and re-importing at 24p later.
Consumer unit swaps and lighting retrofits as ongoing bread-and-butter.
Wind uplift and the Nature Reserve boundary
Pegwell's south side is properly exposed. Onshore winds from the Bay drive the roof-uplift design load higher than a sheltered inland Kent equivalent. We do a proper wind-uplift calculation to BS EN 1991-1-4 for every solar install, and we spec ballast or hidden-hook fixings appropriate to that load. Not a standard cheap-install package.
The Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Ramsar site. That doesn't directly affect residential electrical work, but it means any external work at the boundary (garden lighting, outbuilding supplies close to the reserve edge) can attract questions from Kent Wildlife Trust. We coordinate quietly with them where relevant.
