Signs you shouldn't ignore
You don't need an EICR to know your fusebox is past its life. If any of the following are true, book a survey now:
- Wooden case. Any wooden-cased fusebox is pre-1970. It has no earth-leakage protection. It is a fire risk in its own right, and it will be coded C1 or C2 on any inspection.
- Rewireable fuses (Wylex 3036). Ceramic or plastic fuse-holders with a screw-in cartridge and a piece of fuse wire inside. Rewireable fuses are legal but obsolete; they have no fault-current speed, they cannot discriminate on overload, and they get quietly upgraded (with a thicker piece of wire) after the third trip. Every one we see in the field has been so upgraded.
- No RCD. No 30mA main switch, no split-load device, no individual RCBOs per circuit. A cable nick in a bathroom without RCD protection can kill someone. This has been mandatory on new installs since 2008 (17th Edition) and on any modified installation ever since.
- Brown scorch marks around a fuse or breaker. Loose connection making heat. Fix now.
- Buzzing. Board or a specific breaker audible from a metre away. Loose stack of neutrals or a failing MCB.
- Nuisance tripping. The whole downstairs going off every time the kettle and the tumble dryer run together. Shared RCD nuisance. Full-RCBO board fixes it.
Why 'still works fine' is a bad argument
A fusebox from 1978 that hasn't tripped in 40 years hasn't tripped because it can't. Rewireable fuses don't degrade gracefully; they go from 'working' to 'welded shut on a fault' in a single event. When they weld shut the cable behind them burns instead of the fuse blowing. That's how the electrical fire starts. That's why the Fire Kills campaign puts fuseboxes right at the top of the domestic-fire cause list.
What replacement actually gets you
18th Edition consumer unit (BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2:2022): metal enclosure, RCDs or RCBOs on every circuit, surge protection device (SPD), main switch you can find in the dark. A dual-RCD board keeps two circuits alive if one RCD trips; a full-RCBO board keeps every other circuit alive if one circuit trips. We recommend full-RCBO for anyone with a home office, medical equipment on a circuit, or a nuisance-tripping history. Cost delta from dual-RCD to full-RCBO is £150-300; the ongoing quality-of-life delta is much larger.

Consumer unit swaps in Ramsgate almost always come with a supply-side check: is the meter tail 16mm or 25mm, is the DNO cutout 60A or 100A, is there any earth bonding on the incoming water and gas.
